Pride and Prejudice
Adapted by Christina Calvit
From the Novel by Jane Austen
Directed by Bea Quarrie
Showplace Players proudly presents this award winning stage adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel. There are many adaptations of this 1813 work, almost as many film versions. This version was last seen in Toronto in 2009, and Stratford before that in 1999.
Austen's story of love won and lost and won again is a witty exploration of the universals of love, venality, class pride and yes, prejudice. The play is propelled by sharply drawn characters observed through the wit of Austen's ironic and acerbic lens.
"It is a challenging piece for a large cast, but this version keeps the integrity of the original while being unashamedly theatrical." says director Bea Quarrie. " It is full of movement, dance, witty repartee, verbal jousting as well as slapstick comedy. There is the charm of the Regency period costumes, a bevy of elegant gentlefolk , and choreography supported by the rich music and dances of the period."
